The water proof rating of any two way radio handset is normally set by the IP rating, typically IP54, IP55, IP56, IP66, IP57, IP67, IP68. It is the last digit which specifies the water proof rating/specification whereas the first number specifies the radios ability to resist or stop the ingress of dust and fine particles. The rule is that the higher the IP number or rating the more waterproof and dust proof the radio is.

However this is not the only consideration, it is also the case that as radio handsets become more and more waterproof that their mechanical and electrical serviceability often becomes less easily undertaken and often more expensive to repair, this is due mostly to the design and sealing technology used in high waterproof IP rated radio handsets.

When buying a fully waterproof radio rated to IP57, IP67 or IP68 the buyer should consider whether most of his ongoing repair/maintenance costs with their existing fleet of radios is mechanical damage or water/moisture ingress damage, if most of the maintenance/repair costs in running the radio handset fleet is mechanical damage then it may not be wise to invest in high IP rated waterproof handsets. Conversely if most of the maintenance/repair costs in running a fleet of two way radio handsets is indeed water, wet mud, rain and moisture ingress then investing in a high IP rated two way radio handset makes sense.
